Effortless Exercise: Office Chair Ball Swap

Ball Chair

If you're looking for savvy ways to sneak exercises into your day without stepping foot in a gym, swapping out your regular home office chair for an inexpensive exercise ball is a worthy investment.

Not only does sitting on a ball help strengthen your spine, improve your posture, engage your abs, and aid blood circulation, it's a pretty fun way to blow off steam.  Whenever you find yourself heating up over a slow computer and that dreaded spinning color wheel of death, give a few bounces on your ball chair.  You'll feel better instantly, guaranteed.

Size Guide: Balls range in sizes from 55-75 centimeters, so you'll want to consult a salesperson at your fitness store to ensure you get the best size for your height.  If you'll be using your ball chair a lot, you want to make sure your hips and knees are in proper alignment.

The Last Word on Balls:
According to a 2008 study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology, swapping in a ball chair burns about six percent more calories than sitting in a regular chair.  I don't know about you, but the thought of burning calories while I'm just sitting around is my idea of savvy exercise.

Hi Whitney! Your sitting-on-a-ball at work comment gave me a big laugh. I saw a video ad a couple of years ago where an actress (I can't remember who) was selling a CD demonstrating how to exercise while doing housework (like deep knee bends to put pans in a lower cupboard). I laughed all the way through her video ad because it just seemed like a ridiculous concept, but I tell you, I never forgot it and I find myself squeezing in extra exercises when doing my chores.
