Inexpensive Cures for Chapped Hands

Dry Hands

There's nothing sexy about dry, chapped, red weathered hands.  In fact, it can be downright painful to sport cracked paws, particularly when ordinary washing and drying results in irritated, broken skin and knuckles like sandpaper.

If you've tried lotions and potions with little improvement or worse--a burning sensation, your creamy goodies may contain skin-irritating ingredients like alcohol or fragrances that are actually making the problem worse.  The good news is you can cure chapped paws inexpensively and virtually effortlessly, with the best part of the remedy happening while you're stacking the Z's.

Step One: Moisturize. Our favorite budget-friendly chapping cure is plain old petroleum jelly.  Sure it's not an aroma explosion and the word alone gives us the heebie-jeebies, but it does the trick cheaply and effectively.  If you really don't like the texture of petroleum jelly, these are some savvy alternates:

  • Olive Oil (about 1 teaspoon does the trick)
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Rosebud Salve
  • Aloe Vera Gel (just make sure you have 100%, alcohol-free gel).
  • Vegetable Shortening (I know, gross, but it works!)

(Magic) Step Two: Sock 'Em. Cover hands with cotton socks while you sleep.  Sure we love those cute little cotton gloves sold in the beauty aisle, but a pair of cotton socks does the trick just as well and we love being able to pop them in the hamper after a few uses.
