Fool-Proof Foundation: Finding the Perfect Shade

It's hard to be sure if we've got the right shade of foundation on.  It may look okay in the store, but in certain lighting, maybe it's a just a tad orange, a smidge too dark, or a hair too 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane'-looking.  We had the chance to test out a lovely lightweight foundation from FACE atelier for this article, which made us even more curious for an answer: what IS the secret to scoring the perfect foundation shade and avoiding the dreaded "mask" look?  FACE's Pro Makeup Artist, Amy Roeder tells us, it's all about lighting and location, location, location.  Listen up, savvies:

"Choosing a foundation may seem daunting to some people, but with a little know-how, it's so easy to match the color perfectly.  Foundation should be tested in natural light on your wrist, chin or the best place- NECK- since your neck connects your face and decollate, you can find the best tone that will blend perfectly into both areas.  Natural light is always preferred but if the establishment where you are looking for foundation doesn't have a window nearby, a good tip is to blend the foundation into your neck until you can't see it.  That means even in not-the-best lighting, you have a perfect match."

Savvy Tip: We were provided a free industry sample of FACE's Ultra Foundation, but you can score one for just $1.00--a great way to test out the perfect shade.  Check out the details here.
