Savvy Makeup Buying: When to Splurge, When to Save

I've mentioned before that I'm a pretty cheap frugal Savvy Girl and have a tendency to go strictly "drug-store" beauty all the way.  Which doesn't mean I have anything against luxe products--because I know some of them have incredibly worthy formulations--I just don't know which ones are worth the splurge.  If I've got an extra $40 to blow on beauty buys, is that $34 Yves Saint Laurent gloss really worth it?  What about the $38 Nars Cheek Stain?  Turns out....neither.

While I talked red-lip with Cloutier makeup artist Ricky Wilson, I got the dish on where the pros spend, where they save and where to direct your cash any time you're refreshing your makeup bag.

Savvy Makeup Buying Tips: Where Makeup Artists Splurge & Save:

Splurge on these:
Skincare & Foundation: You want to get the best possible match for your skin. The textures are much nicer as well, leaving the skin even without looking like a mask. Ricky's favorite? Dior Airflash Spray Makeup
Mascara: Ricky says he wouldn't skimp on mascara either because if you use the "cheap" mascaras for too long your lashes become dry and brittle and could become thinner over time.  An industry favorite splurge is Dior Show

Save on these:
Lip Glosses & Blushes:
These products are pretty standard so if you are looking to save a few extra bucks you can pick them up at the drug store.  We live by drugstore brands like Almay, Neutrogena and L'Oreal, particularly their Bare Naturale line of soft, flattering shades for lip and blush, like Bare Naturale Gentle Lip Conditioner and Bare Naturale Blush.
