The recommended daily allowance of alcohol for women is no more than 2 units a day. Ok, fine, but what is a unit? 12 oz of beer or a 5 oz glass of wine. The beer part we're fine with, but 5 OZ OF WINE?! So tiny! WAH! Take a good look at the photo above, our friends' glasses have about 5 oz of wine in them. Isn't that sad? If that portion size is a surprise to you, read on for tips on keeping your wino ways in check.
Savvy Strategy for Drinking in Moderation:
- Drink only half of what is in your glass. If a waiter, friend, or companion insists on refilling, you're only taking in half as much as you would otherwise. Also, those seeing a glass still somewhat full may pass you by on refill time so you're in control of what you're drinking.
- Drink out of smaller glasses. I love those giant Reidel goblets as much as the next gal, but 'lo, they are the Super Big Gulp of wine glasses. Switch to simple wine glasses with a shorter bulb or those cute Pyrex bistro glasses the cafes in Paris use.
- Slow it down. If you follow our advice about the smaller glasses, I guarantee you'll really savor what you've got. Studies show after your first few sips, you taste buds are numb anyway, so why not enjoy one great glass of wine rather than 3 you can't even taste anymore?
- Pick a non-alcoholic back up bev. After you've had your allocated two glasses, switch to sparkling water and lime or something else non-alcoholic you enjoy.
- Use a half bottle of wine as a decanter. After you've enjoyed your half bottle, keep it as your serving vessel at home. If you're a Single Savvy Girl, half of the half bottle is for you at any given time. If you're a Coupled Savvy Girl, you and your partner can suck down the entire bottle in a sitting.
