Pot Luck for a Purpose

Kids at Dine In

Every holiday season, my friends and I brainstorm ways to help those in need.  We have 14 children between the five of us, and we look for ways to teach our kids how to help others.  In the past we’ve wrapped Christmas gifts for inner-city families, as well as helped military families through the Angel Tree program.  This year we chose to Dine In and help feed families for Thanksgiving.  Dine In is an initiative of Here’s Life Inner City, an urban organization dedicated to helping the poor.  The concept is simple.  Instead of dining out, my friends and I ‘dined in’ with a delicious pot luck dinner.

We donated the money we would have spent on dinner out and sponsored Boxes of Love for Thanksgiving instead.  Each Box of Love is hand-delivered by an inner-city church volunteer, and contains the holiday trimmings to feed a family of six.  Our pot luck Dine In was a success!  We sponsored several Boxes of Love, plus taught our children the importance of helping others and how to show gratitude for all we have in our lives.  When I sit down with my family this Thanksgiving, I’ll think of the families who will receive a Box of Love.  The knock on their door, the surprise on their face and the joy they feel when they realize they’re not alone and there are people who can help.  I’m grateful my friends and my family can play a small part.  So join the Dine In initiative or stay in the loop on Facebook and feed a family for Thanksgiving!  You’ll be grateful you did!

As a southerner living in New York City for the last 14 years, I’ve become street and city savvy.  I live in Queens with my husband and three small kids.  Of course my current job is a mom, but I also work for an organization which helps inner-city churches reach those less fortunate.  I live a well-rounded savvy life and continually remind myself to enjoy each day.
