It may sound selfish, but it’s truly savvy.  Whether you’re single, dating, married or a parent, when you take time for yourself, everyone benefits!  As a mom of three small children, I can lose myself in the day-to-day care of my kids and home.  From carpools, to kids’ activities, to meals, to errands, there’s little room to even eat my lunch.

When we don’t carve out some "me time" in our week we can become resentful of those around us.  But "me time" is a choice.  You have to make it happen and when you do, don’t feel guilty about it!  You’re not selfish.  You’re smart and those around you will appreciate how you value yourself.  My own results —I’m a calmer mom, a happier wife, a kinder friend and healthier me.

Some Ideas to Get You Started with Me Time:

Cycling with friends

  1. What do you enjoy, or want to learn how to do?   Can you do it while your child naps, or maybe when your spouse is home?  I try and run with other moms at 5:30 a.m. while my family sleeps.
  2. Can you hire a babysitter or share babysitting with another mom and do something other than errands?  Grab a coffee and relax, or get your nails done.
  3. Keep a favorite book, magazine or newspaper with you.  You never know when you’ll have ten minutes to read.
  4. Getaway with good friends!  Or better, getaway with your spouse.  Your kids will survive and have fun without you.

If you already take time out for yourself, great job!  If not, then try it this week. Whatever stage of life you’re in find out what refreshes you to face the world again!

As a southerner living in New York City for the last 14 years, I’ve become street and city savvy.  I live in Queens with my husband and three small kids.  Of course my current job is a mom, but I also work for an organization which helps inner-city churches reach those less fortunate.  I live a well-rounded savvy life and continually remind myself to enjoy each day.
