Beyond the Tie: Father's Day Gifts He Really Will Love

Dad, Dad, what to get Dad? Is it me or are Dads impossible to shop for...so much more so than Moms.  What do Dads like?  What do Dads need?  Often times...the answer is simple: nothing.  Studies show we spend far more money on Mother's Day than Father's Day and Dad is more likely to say "meh" to the idea of gifts altogether.  Not that this lets you off the gift-giving hook entirely. Oh no.  With Dad, it’s just a different KIND of giving.

Research shows that Dads generally prefer to forego that talking remote grill thermometer or silk tie and either spend quality time with their family or receive a homemade gift from the grandkids.  So my fellow savvistas, whether you're on the hunt for the perfect gift for your Dad or you're helping Wee Savvies conjure up a plan for theirs, put down that credit card and put on your creative cap.

Savvy Seven: Father's Day Gift Ideas He Really Will Love

Green Thumb Dad: Pick out some special seeds, plants, vegetables or flowers and help Dad freshen up his garden.

Sweet Tooth Dad: Bake up a batch or two of Dad's favorite sweet and package them in a unique container.  We're doing oatmeal cookies in 99-cent-store mason jars this year.

Sporty Dad: Find out if Dad's favorite baseball team is playing and book tickets to see a game together.

Equestrian Dad: Pack up a picnic and head to the racetrack. Dad doesn't have to have deep pockets to enjoy the races, he can make mini bets for as little as ten cents and entrance fees are usually not more than $2.

Gourmet Dad: If you enjoy cooking, whip up a special meal for Dad, something out of the ordinary, like a fondue, and enjoy it together.  Or, if you're not culinarily gifted, take Dad out for dinner at his favorite restaurant.

Nature-Loving Dad: Research trails around your town.  Pack some sammies, bottled water, trail mix and a nature guide and go for a hike.

Fisherman Dad: Kind of elaborate, but fishing with Dad is an experience to remember your whole life.  Take Dad to a local stream and drop in your lines together or if you lack equipment or are just not up to the task, grab some trout and throw them on the grill.  He'll still appreciate the gesture.
