How to Enjoy Football When You're Not a Fan

Football season is here! I know what most of you ladies must be thinking: ’Great, now I won’t see my husband/boyfriend for the next few months’…or, perhaps: ‘What is he talking about…all that 3rd and 1 stuff?’ I certainly wouldn’t blame you for feeling this way. The good news is that you CAN get it. And you can score some major points with your significant other with just a little effort to understand his world a bit more.

When my wife and I were just dating, I made it something of a personal mission to get her into football. I figured that if I could get her into it the benefits would be twofold: 1) Less complaining when I want to watch a game, and 2) I like having her around.  I remember a buddy of mine who even suggested a strategy: give her the underlying drama/storyline and she’ll get hooked and then will want to learn more. That sounded logical enough for me. The truth is that the NFL is wrought with enough sordid storylines to script an entire season of All My Children.  As far as football drama goes, I am a regular (read: obsessive) reader of the #1 football blog in the world. The writers at ProFootballTalk have a way of getting the inside scoop of what’s going on in and around the football world and presenting it in a funny way. Then, if you want to know some of the more technical X’s and O’s of football, there is now a ‘made for ladies’ book (written by a guy I know) that explains everything you need to know in a very palatable way…and it’s formatted for Kindle.

Football has now become an event in our house. At the beginning of the season, I think my wife was more excited about it than I was (ok…not really, but close).  We like to invite friends over and make some good food. As she watched more and more with me, she would ask questions and I would explain things to her. She began to catch on to the point where one time at a party, she explained to some friends how the Saints used a zone-blitz scheme to outwit the opposing offense. I could only stand in awe like the proud man that I was. I don’t know who was the bigger fan…her or me.
