Savvy Spotlight: Big Ass Book of Crafts 2 Author Mark Montano

  1. What's the savviest thing you've learned building your "Big Ass Book of Craft" empire? The biggest thing I've learned is that things take time. Nothing happens overnight and I've always been super impatient.  Like the rest of the world, I want it now and it just can't happen that way. I have had to learn to enjoy the process and the daily task of creating my Big Ass life. Time is our biggest gift and we need to appreciate it while it's happening.  Live in the moment, work like crazy, love what you do and be focused.
  2. What are the three savviest things a person can do to bring style to their home on a budget? Good bedding should be your biggest expense if you're on a budget because you spend 1/2 of your time in bed.  Next, mirrors make any home look amazing and they are relatively inexpensive and change the light in wonderful ways.  Finally, BOOKS! Books you love, hardcover books from the thrift store that you will read.  They look terrific stacked and they expand your mind and people will know you're savvy when they see what fabulous things you're learning about.
  3. What about personal style? It's all about personal style isn't it? It's the ONLY thing that really separates us from one another.  If it weren't we would all look like we lived in an Ikea catalog and shopped at the GAP. Though I love Ikea, who wants to live like everyone else? Knowing your likes and dislikes is a good start.  Me, I don't like mid century....gasp! I like Craftsman and Victorian. I love hybrids of things, I love the yellows and fleur des lis. My favorite color is green but I primarily wear blues.  Make your list of things you love and go out there to and create your own style.
  4. What are the savviest craft-making tools you have and couldn't possibly live without? Krylon Fusion Spray Paints, E-6000 Glue, Elmer's Glue, Fiskars Razor Scissors, Cardboard, Cutting knives from the 99c store and instant coffee made like an espresso.
  5. Where can savvistas "shop" for savvy crafting ideas? Everywhere!  From the web to street. If you see something you love, try to make it. Chances are it won't turn out exactly like you planned, but EVEN BETTER!
  6. What's your savviest tip? I have so many. Spend money on your shoes, they say a lot! The best style I've seen across the board did not take a lot of money but imagination and creativity which is free.  Be KIND to people and genuinely interested in what they have to say and you will go far. Kindness is something people will note about you.
  7. If you came into an unexpected sum of money, what would your savviest splurge be? I would pay for arts curriculums to be put back in our school systems so that kids can learn the value of creativity and the joy it brings.  After that, I'd have to say a private jet.

We love you, Mark!!!

I have always had a love/hate relationship with my hot glue gun, I can't tell you how many times I have burned myself with that hot glue; but I love it! Also, my Fiskars scissors and trimmer.

I loved the interview with Mark. I totally agree with putting Arts back in the schools. How sad it is that they no longer have that.

I have lots of great crafting tools including my X-Acto knife that I've used to cut paper and mat board and even for carving finer details on a pumpkin. I used to work in an office that had an old reducing enlarging copier that you could adjust the lightness/darkness of the toner. I would make a drawing and repeatedly make copies of the copy, always darkening the toner to thicken-up the lines and that was a fun tool. But if I had to choose my true favorite crafting tool it would be an old worn tapered burnishing stick that i got free at an art store years ago (it has advertising printed all over it). I have used it to crisp a folded edge, firmly press down a glued piece, or for burnishing metal leaf. I have some fancy metal burnishers too but this old freebie feels so good in my hand.

Wow, there are so many! But I'd have to say my savviest crafting tool would have to be my heavy duty crafting scissors. Simple but elegant, so to speak. They work on everything from paper to fabric to metal wire. Best investment I ever made!

  • Alexandra Unruh
My favorite and best used crafting tool is my sewing machine. Couldnt live without it!
  • Serena  - Savviest Crafting Tool
I think my most favorite crafting tool has to be my rotatory cutter. It is soooo useful. I'm not a fan of using scissors, mainly because I can not cut a straight line with them to save my life. However, rotatory cutters make my life a lot easier. I just hold it against a ruler, push it and there is a straight cut!
  • shannon whitetritz  - Question: What's the savviest crafting tool you've
Id have to say my books of ideas. LOVE CRAFTING LOVE NEW IDEAS>>> and I have fallen asleep with a couple of them!
  • Katie White
The savviest crafting tool that i've ever bought was a hot glue gun, because you can do alot of things with some hot glue.
  • Rebecca Adams  - re: Big Ass Book and Savviest Tool
My attention span is short, and my memory often shorter. My favorite tool is always the one I am using at the time. Right now, my savviest tool is a band saw. While I haven't snuggled up in bed with it, that does not negate its usefulness. Sometimes, opting NOT to snuggle up with something or someone is a savvy move. So, it can stay in its special place in the garage where I will visit often, flipping it's levers and turning it's knobs as the mood strikes.
  • Theresa D  - entry
My best crafting tool is my Cricut.
  • shirley pebbles  - Crafting Contest

  • beth  - saviest crafting tool
definitely my paper cutter, it makes nice, straight lines
  • Judy  - savviest
I seem to use my fiskars paper trimmer, and my scotch laminator the most. Not sure that makes me savvy?
  • Kylie c
I'm in love with my sewing machine, especially since I had a duh! moment last week and realized that I could just zig-zag the edges of my embroidery and Aida fabrics to keep them from unraveling while stitching. So much easier than taping or gluing them.
  • nicole dunlop  - Glue Gun
OMG mine would be my Glue Gun I could snuggle with that thing every night!! It's great for Crafts and repairs and quick emergency fixes!

Ugh, I hate to be that girl, but Martha Stewart was right: if you do origami, you need a bone folder. I tried to get on without one for a looooong time. Seriously, guys, listen to Martha. Not on everything, but the lady has some good ideas.
