Waste/Want Not: Savvy Tip for Excess Tomato Paste

It's a particular pet peeve at Savvy Central when recipes call for a tablespoon of tomato paste and all we've got lying around is the standard 6 oz can with eight times what we need and and no tomato-paste-requiring-recipes on our menu to speak of.  What on earth are we supposed to do with all that paste?

We've tried loading it in a tupperware, popping it in the freezer and 'lo what a fiasco to try to extract another tablespoon a month later for that beef stew we've got on the burner.  To remove that little square inch of paste, I've gone as far as hammer and nails, I tell you.  You can ask Mr. Savvy if you don't believe me.

Thanks to a thoughtful tip from a savvy reader, we are armed and ready for our next bout in the ring with tomato paste.  Savvy Girl Niftypearl suggests that you just scoop your excess tomato paste by one tablespoon portions onto wax paper and put the paper directly into the freezer.  Two hours later, voila: you can pop your perfectly proportioned tomato paste buttons into a ziploc and you're good to go for eight more recipes without wasting a drop.  Thanks, Niftypearl!

Savvy Scoop. For those of you who avoid extra work like the plague, you can always buy tomato paste by the tube, but be prepared to pay about 3 times the price as a generic can.
