budget living saving money

We believe reaching savvy nirvana is best attained through small, sustainable efforts done every day to live comfortably and peacefully within your means without looking over the fence and thinking your neighbor's lawn is oh-so-much-greener than yours or feeling like you're missing out on "the good life" just because you're working with a budget.

Getting your savvy on could mean putting a little more thought into purchases before making them OR grabbing something at the library rather than buying it OR whipping up something at home rather than splurging at a store out OR finding a way to use that SUPER SAVVY THING before chucking it--it all adds up.  How you get your savvy on is up to you, but here's how we do it and what we did last week.

Savvy 7 Things We Did Last Week to Savy Money

  1. Made a homemade tooth whitener in preparation for a saucy V-Day with Mr. Savvy.
  2. Sent homemade gifties to a friend needing a pick-me up with repurposed wrapping supplies
  3. Wore my favorite new earrings I scored during the last visit to Mom's house.
  4. Remembered to do that ice-cold shower rinse to tame my sudden freaky folicle flyaways without buying new products.
  5. Restored my towels to their original clean, hotel-fluffy goodness with this cheap recipe.
  6. Skipped the new releases display at the bookstore (have you LOOKED at hardcover prices lately?) and picked up a classic at the library.
  7. Got my budget-friendly cultcha-fix with free wine at a local gallery.

This past week I was inspired by a pattern on cocoknits.com to knit sheets (ripped into rags) that I'm not using into a rug... I'm super excited about the finished product!
  • rlgrady  - I got my savvy on!
I got my savvy on by getting an awesome foot massage thingy at Goodwill. I saved $30 by getting it used, and it is as good as new.
  • Graylee  - Handmade my Mom a Card
It reminded me of being a "KID" again. I used my color copier and took many "Old" pictures and made this amazing, fun birthday card for my Mom. She LOVED IT. On the back, I put, "When you care enough to MAKE the very best" and a photo of me when I was a kid. I had a great time making it and my Mom displays it proudly! (~_~)

What a nice thing to do for your Mom. I remember making cards for my parents/siblings when I was a kid too—I wonder why I ever stopped?
  • KimberlyAD  - I took advantage of local deal emails!
I used one of those "Real Deal" daily deal coupons for a local restaurant, getting $25 worth of food for only $12.

My friend and I had a movie night and painted out nails instead of getting manicures and going out!
  • molly3  - Kind of Coupon Crazy
I do make my own toothpaste, but last week was a big couponing week for me. I never used to bother clipping coupons, but with food and gas prices rising as they have, I definitely clip them now. Last week I managed to buy John Frieda Root Awakening shampoo/conditioner and the store (CVS) actually ended up paying me the balance plus a little extra back—so the products were free! I don't always score that kind of deal but I would say that with coupons I generally save between $20 and $60 per large grocery shopping trip which I think is pretty great.

Brought water with me in the car instead of stopping for a soda at the gas station. Saved a buck and it was healthier!
