Savvy Summer Wedding Savings
As a guest who is going to many a wedding this year, it has been quite the dilemma to figure out the best way to stay within my budget while finding the appropriate gifts for showers and bachelorettes and ceremonies, not to mention figuring out my own attire! Unfortunately, when a bunch of your friends who are in the same social circles as you get married, it doesn’t quite work to wear the same outfit to all of them!
So, I’ve compiled a short list of strategies to help you find the perfect gifts and outfits, while avoiding maxing out your cards.
1. Go in on it together.
Weddings can get really expensive, especially when you are invited to all the pre-events that involve bringing a gift. So, why not buy a gift with a friend? Combining your resources is a great way to save a bit while getting that slightly more expensive gift that the bride really wanted.
2. Save for the sale.
This may seem like an obvious strategy, but look for the sale items. When you first receive the gift registry, take a scan through the items and see if anything is on sale. If not, wait a bit, checking back every so often– you would be surprised to see what items get discounted in the time between the invite and the actual event! And most people wait till the last minute to buy gifts, so don’t worry too much about that item getting snatched up by someone else.
3. Make it yourself.
Are you a sewer, a baker, or crafter? Maybe you work for an airline and get awesome discounts. Whatever it is, use your talents and resources to your advantage when thinking about your gift. Maybe your connections to a hotel chain can get them a great deal on some rooms for a weekend, or your longstanding commitment to a certain brand has gained you an awesome discount. Perhaps you know the couple really needs some new curtains for their place, and you just happen to be quite nifty with a sewing machine. Personalized gifts that are a bit out of the box are sure to be appreciated.
4. Rent it out.
Despite my love of dresses and all things fancy, it just isn’t practical to collect all these pretty things that you only wear once or twice. A great solution for this dilemma is to rent your dress! There are quite a few companies that provide gorgeous unique pieces that will have everyone asking where you got it, and all for a savvy price tag. Some places even provide accessories, backup sizes in case it doesn’t fit, and free shipping on your returns! I love Rent the Runway and Girl Meets Dress.
5. Plan together, stay together.
Is the event outside the city? Maybe you need to get a hotel room, or rent a car? Collaborate with a group of friends and make a weekend of it, tacking on that vacation you’ve been meaning to take by spending a few extra days away. Sharing the load on transportation and accommodation goes a long way; and Airbnb is a fabulous solution for when you need to be affordable and functional- often you will have use of the kitchen so if you do stay longer you can cook your own food.
