How to Tell if Clothes Are Well Made

How to Tell if Clothes Are Well Made

Whether you've got deep pockets or are living in shallow financial waters at present, you never want to blow good money on poorly made clothes.  To find out if a piece is well-constructed or not, the devil is in the details....just quickly check these four things to find out if you've got a "savvy" fashion find or a "silly" back-on-the-rack dud. High prices don't always mean high quality, dontcha know.

  • Seams. Pull gently on two sides of a seam and inspect how well it is stitched. If the fabric spreads easily or if loose threads are visible, put it back.  You can also tell a lot by the quality of the thread and we all know what miniature-sewing-kit thread looks like.  Avoid it.
  • Finishing. Seam edges and hems should be finished, never left undone which will lead to fabric fraying.  Seams should also allow at least a 1/2" of fabric to ensure it won’t come loose, leading to annoying and sometimes costly repairs.
  • Details. Buttons should be sturdily affixed (no loosies) and trim should be attached evenly and finished cleanly.  Loose threads and uneven details are usually an indicator of cheap, sloppy work.
  • Patterns. Check seams to make sure patterns and stripes line up properly.  A good piece will be well constructed with carefully monitored details like matched-up prints.
