How to 'Travel' When You're Broke
Want to travel, but can't afford it at the moment? Here are four drool-worthy films that I use to tide me over when my bank account isn't that healthy.
- The Darjeeling Limited. One of my favorite Wes Anderson films, it is the tale of three brothers who attempt to bond by traveling across India.
- Hector and the Search for Happiness. Humorous and British (two big checks on my list), this movie is about a burnt-out psychiatrist who ends up traveling the world (Asia-Africa-North America) asking what makes people happy.
- The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. This Ben Stiller movie is one of my faves; he stars as a boring and somewhat sheltered office worker at the Times Magazine, and by various happenstances ends up going on the adventure he always dreamed of but didn't think he was brave enough to take.
- The Way. I actually haven't seen this one, but enough friends have told me about it that it is at the top of my to-see list. It follows the story of a father who goes to France to pick up the ashes of his son who died on the Camino. He decides to finish what his son began, and finds life and healing along the way.
