Stick To It!

Stick To It!

It can be hard to stick with your resolutions, and ones that involve finances prove to be no exception. I find that it can be so easy to keep your focus narrow, and lose sight of the wider vision of what you are saving for that it doesn't even feel like compromising when you break your budget goals. That's what it's like with fitness or health goals as well, you just want that immediate gratification, and you forget to look at the whole picture. Well, here are a few financial tips to keep you on track, to save more and spend less!

  • Personalize your list. Don't be vague with your goals. It's when you go broad and esoteric in your goals that they lose all tangibility- and don't feel like they are ever achievable. Pick real, personal goals that you really want, and map out practical steps to get there.
  • Get a second opinion. Whether you tend to go crazy or ultra conservative and not challenge yourself, it is always good to show someone who you respect and can be a voice of wisdom in your life. They may help you with practical places to trim your budget, or see where you are being unrealistic.
  • Be accountable. I have a friend who had a goal to save, and to help her achieve it she actually gave another friend a chunk of money to keep until she matched that amount. This might not work for everyone, but for her it totally motivated her to keep to her budget, in order to get that money back, and she had a friend to cheer her on!
  • Take an honest look at your possessions. We live in a culture that is obsessed with consumption at a very high rate. How much do you want to bet that a good number of your wardrobe doesn't get worn, or you have some nice jewelry that is rarely touched? Check out our handy list of apps to sell items on, and put some profit towards your goals.
