Healthy Hair, Happy Hair

Healthy Hair, Happy Hair

Glossy, healthy hair that looks and feels great; that’s the dream, right?!

Well, the average American woman spends nearly a quarter of a million dollars in her lifetime to achieve just that, according to a 2017 Groupon study. While it’s important to think about the products and processes you apply to your hair (and recognize that less may be more in those cases), it’s also crucial to think about how you can nourish it from within.  Your hair can give you clues as to your overall health, and what may be lacking.  So how can you look after yourself inside and out to achieve great hair and all round wellbeing?

Go for a rainbow plate

Being deficient in certain vitamins and minerals can really weaken your hair.  As far as possible, try to enjoy a variety of delicious foods in your diet, including proteins, Omega 3 fatty acids and iron.  Reading up on the benefits of great nutrition for your hair will empower you to make great choices in the store and on your plate, and your whole body will thank you for it.

Get sleep savvy

Your body needs rest to recover from the day’s exertions and replenish its reserves. Try to get 7-9 hours sleep each night to see the benefits to your hair, skin, and overall wellbeing.  Run a warm bath, enjoy a herbal tea and avoid screen time before bed (yep, no late night scrolling!) to encourage peaceful sleep if you can.

Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse

Water is vital for so many aspects of health.  The NAM recommends an intake of just under 3 liters of water per day for women; that’s in total, taken from both food and beverages.  Hair that is moisturized from within should be less prone to frizzies, so drink up!

Finally, be kind to yourself.  Stress and anxiety can have a really damaging effect on the health and condition of hair, so where possible, try to take the pressure off.  Remember each hair type is different, and for every person lusting after tumbling curls, there’s someone else wishing they could rock a pixie crop.  Hang up the straighteners once in a while, or find a more gentle coloring product.
Eat well, sleep well; love what you’re working with.  After all, savvy women know that looking after themselves leads to glowing beauty from within.  And that’s the real crowning glory!
