Also -- I actually got my current bike from a yard sale. A couple had bought it for their son who only ever rode it once. They just wanted to get rid of it. It was a great bike and it only cost me $16. I was so excited. So, I do recommend yard sales and auctions and other such places for great deals as well.

there is also freecycle and some cities have "red bikes" - bikes for the using for free

I love to go bike riding. When I was in college that was my only mode of transport.
craigslist is awesome. use i all the time! Great place to get rid of stuff that you would usually just donate. Savvy way to fatten the pocket book.
I've heard such great things about Craigslist, but I've never given it a try. I really need to check it out.
