Savvy Music Inventions

Savvy Music Inventions

We have come a long way from Thomas Edison’s phonograph invention in 1877 to the way we consume recorded sounds today. So we thought it would be fun to take a walk down memory lane of inventions that shaped music as we know it. From an article by Rolling Stone, these are five standouts that we think were certainly savvy for their time.

The Microphone

This invention is credited to British telegraph pioneer David Edward Hughes (even though Thomas Edison got the patent). Thanks Mr. Hughes - without you we wouldn’t have such things like this super fun rose gold portable karaoke microphone! Trust us, it will be your new favorite activity for parties 🎤

Headphones

Who knew that something we personally can’t leave home without was crafted by a Mormon named Nathaniel Baldwin. His invention took off when the Navy “ordered hundreds of sets in anticipation of a world war.” For a modern option (and one thing we will savvily splurge on), we love Bose’s wireless noise cancelling headphones in color Soapstone.

Two-Channel Stereo

This game-changer brought to you by Bell Labs in 1937 made one of the most iconic Disney films, Fantasia, so memorable. It was “the first commercial studio film amplified by high-fidelity stereo sound.“ We can say thank you Bell Labs and, “congratulations to you, Mickey.”

Cassette Tapes

How would so many teens express their love through mixed tapes without this music invention?! We even remember our first one (Whitney Houston, yes please!)! First introduced in 1963 at a fair in Berlin, these antiquated but beloved things will forever have a place in music history.

The Walkman

We would be remiss if we did not mention Sony’s The Walkman, a music tool synonymous with the 1980s. Did you know it was first called the Sound-About in America? Without this portable music playing machine, we might not now be able to have endless entertainment while on the go.
