Life In Bloom

Life In Bloom

“Stop and smell the roses.” We’ve all heard this saying before, but there is good reason why maybe heeding this advice is a savvy thing to do. We recently came across an article about a 10-month long study conducted by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey that looked at participants’ behavioral and emotional responses to receiving flowers. The conclusion: flowers can improve mental health. You know we are staunch proponents for anything that can have a positive impact on our mental state!

Curious about why beautiful blooms are beneficial? There are several reasons.

  1. According to Psychology Today, flowers trigger the brain to release chemicals associated with happiness and social trust, such as dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin.

  2. Humans associate flowers with nature, and being connected to nature is shown to alleviate stress and anxiety.

  3. Flowers are colorful, and those colors can help us improve health and find balance within ourselves. According to Sunlighten, the process of using colors to heal is called chromotherapy, where “ each color possesses frequencies of a specific vibration, and each vibration is related to different physical symptoms.”

  4. The study also showed that the presence of flowers led to more contact with family and friends. We discussed in a previous post (Family Ties) why spending time with loved ones is beneficial.
