Top Tips For Plant Parents

Who else here is obsessed with Netflix’s ‘The Big Flower Fight’? If you’re not familiar, we recommend stopping what you’re doing now and go binge it. ‘The Great British Bake Off’ adjacent, contestants compete making elaborate and stunning floral arrangements. SO entertaining! One of our favorite contestants was Nick Cutsumpas (aka Farmer Nick), who just so happened to hail from our home city of New York. As a fellow plant lover with a not-so-green thumb, we decided to turn to him for some savvy tips on how to care for our houseplants. Check them out:

  1. Don’t overwater. According to Nick, overwater is one of the number one reasons for houseplants dying. That is because overwatering leads to root rot, which can be deadly. Most houseplants only need to be watered once a week. Pro tip: take the time to learn specific watering requirements for each of your plants and be sure to follow them.

  2. Check in daily. Doing daily check-ins with your plants will allow you to spot any warning signs of issues and take care of them before they become too problematic. Pro tip: pay attention to the small details.

  3. Know your environment. Different plants need different environments. Some need lots of light, some need less, etc. If you know what your space can provide and then buy your plants accordingly, they will have much more of a chance to thrive. Pro tip: Knowing a plants’ requirements and being honest with yourself about your commitment level before buying will save you money!

  4. Get professional help. There are so many professionals that offer resources if you need help diagnosing plant problems, deciding on which plants are right for you, etc. FPro tip: Nick offers plant coaching to design your very own urban jungle! It doesn’t get much savvier than that.

  5. Don’t get discouraged. Struggling plants happen to even the savviest of plant parents, so don’t give up when some of yours are having some health issues. Pro tip: learn as much as you can and don’t beat yourself up when some of your plants inevitably have some issues.

We love all of these savvy tips for caring for houseplants, and we know we’ll be implementing them on our own.
