Towel Talk

Towel Talk

I don’t know about you, but I find myself constantly discovering ways I can live a more eco-friendly lifestyle by learning things I never would have thought of as being harmful to the environment. One of those recent things - towels! That’s right, what you dry off with after your shower or bath can have a significant impact. But I absolutely love wrapping up in a quality fresh towel after I step out of the shower, so I really didn’t want to compromise the quality of the product either. SO, I did the savvy thing and found the best of both worlds! Below are some of my favorite choices for towels that are also environmentally conscious.

First, you might be asking how the towels you use can have an impact. I’ll tell you. Traditional towels are made of conventionally farmed cotton, which contributes to land degradation, excessive water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the dyeing process of traditional towels causes water pollution. What’s more, traditionally manufactured towels undergo a chemical treatment process to help them stay usable longer. These chemicals actually break down each time it is washed, actually causing more rapid degradation. This means you have to replace towels more often, which is not good for the environment or your wallet. Definitely not savvy. So what are some alternative choices? My recommendation is to look for towels that are made from organic and natural materials, like organic cotton, bamboo, and hemp, and that are also sustainably manufactured. Here are my top contenders that you can feel good about purchasing without sacrificing quality or comfort:

Organic Cotton - Coyuchi

From the farm to the factory, Coyuchi is committed to upholding the strictest of environmental standards in the manufacturing process for all of their products, including of course towels. What we really find impressive about this company's model is they practice a Circular Initiative.  All Coyuchi products begin with 100% organic fibers and a traceable supply chain. 2nd Home Renewed™ products are Coyuchi linens that have been returned to us through their 2nd Home Take Back™ program. Partners at the Renewal Workshop take great care to clean these items, check for flaws, and repair them to be as good as new. If the material is too damaged to be used again, it is aggregated for recycling. We find that just so savvy. I can’t recommend enough their Cloud Loom™ Organic Towels, which come in a variety of pretty colors. You will just love these, I know it.

Bamboo - ettitude

A lot of times bamboo is manufactured, also like cotton, using harmful processes and chemicals. Not these! Ettitude towels are made from 100% organic bamboo processed in a closed loop system using an organic solvent and mechanical processes rather than toxic chemicals. If you want your towels to give you the feeling of being at a luxury spa, these are for you! Check out the Waffle Towel Set for $74.

Hemp - Anact

Anact’s goal: “to disrupt the textile industry and show that you can be sustainable without a sacrifice.” I can get behind that! Their products are designed to last and be reused when their original use is up with a 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton blend. My favorite is the Bath Towel Set for $60.
