Savvy Summer Reading Series: Books to Screen

Savvy Summer Reading Series: Books to Screen

In part 2 of the Savvy Summer Reading Series, we bring you books that this year have been made into movies and television. And yes, some you can definitely read and then follow up with a Netflix binge session for those stormy raining evenings.

Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

  • Quick Rundown: This graphic novel series will definitely tug at your heartstrings as a modern story of love in such a fun format for the beach! Rolling Stone perfectly describes this series as “the coming-of-age story follows two British teenage boys, Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson, as they navigate the beginnings of love, friendship, and heartbreak, all while trying to manage the everyday trials of high school.

  • Why We Love It: I personally flew through this series. There is something about a tale of the struggles of love and heartbreak during highschool that just feels universally relatable. I also appreciate the fact that it depicts a modern love that is relevant to this time, and hope that it makes others going through the same struggles feel more seen and accepted. Lastly, who doesn’t love a graphic novel? All of the vibrant colors and animations makes it that much more exciting to read.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

  • Quick Rundown: Talk about drama and intrigue. “Where the Crawdads Sing is part bildungsroman and part crime drama, centered around Kya, a wild and unkempt girl. The book follows the ups and downs of her life. She lives a lonely life, but her story is a hopeful one as well. With a little help, she's able to survive and even learn to read“ (the-bibliofile.com).

  • Why We Love It: When I first heard that this book was being adapted by screen, I couldn’t have been more excited because this book was such a pleasure to read. Not only is it suspenseful and mysterious, but it is thought-provoking and very well written. I cannot recommend this book enough for your next summer read.

Anatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughan

  • Quick Rundown: “An astonishingly incisive and suspenseful novel about a scandal amongst Britain’s privileged elite and the women caught up in its wake” (goodreads.com).

  • Why We Love It: This is a tale of two women on either side of a man’s innocence, and it will keep you guessing who is in the right until the end. You know we love suspense, and there is just something about a British high society scandal we can’t get enough of. This will definitely make those long summer days fly by.

The Black Phone by Joe Hill

  • Quick Rundown: The Black Phone tells “the story of a young boy named Finney, who is kidnapped and imprisoned in a basement where a mysterious old telephone allows him to hear the voices (and potentially lifesaving guidance) of the serial killer’s previous victims” (Vanity Fair).

  • Why We Love It: Joe Hill just has a way with short stories, and The Black Hill is no different. And while this single short story isn’t exactly long enough to keep you occupied for a whole day at the pool, the collection it is found in, 20th Century Ghosts, sure will! Trust us, you’re going to want to read it.

Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie

  • Quick Rundown: “The tranquility of a cruise along the Nile is shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway has been shot through the head. She was young, stylish and beautiful, a girl who had everything – until she lost her life.

Hercule Poirot recalls an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: ‘I’d like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.’ Yet in this exotic setting’ nothing is ever quite what it seems…” (agathachristie.com)

  • Why We Love It: I mean, Agatha Christie. Need I say more? If you loved Murder on the Orient Express like I did, then you will love this novel too!
