Kitchen Swaps that Just Make Sense

Kitchen Swaps that Just Make Sense

Many say the kitchen is the heart of the home. So much time is spent in the kitchen making food, eating it, and sharing incredible memories. But did you know that many items in your kitchen are not as sustainable as they could be? Think about it, there is so much plastic in our kitchens that we don’t even realize and BILLIONS of tons of plastic from our kitchen ends up in landfills each year.

So what are we going to do about it? Well let’s start by swapping out some of those easy to throw away plastic products with items that are much more sustainable. It’s not as hard as you might think and you won’t have to sacrifice the convenience of your old, one-use products while also saving money (comeon everyone wants that)!

These are the amazing kitchen swaps I recommend for a more sustainable and savvy kitchen:

Okay let me tell you, this all natural cleaning cloth is a game changer. They are the perfect swap for any traditional paper towel product. They are reusable, extremely absorbent, and top quality. Not to mention they come in a TON of different, cute designs. There’s something for everyone! And just one Swedish Dishcloth can replace up to 17 rolls of paper towels a year. Not only are you doing your part to reduce landfill waste, but you are saving money when you don’t have to buy as many disposable towels. Who doesn’t want that??

We may use cling wrap and saran wrap to protect our food for a little while, but when we are done with it, it ends up in the trash and more often than not eventually in a landfill or the ocean. That is why using reusable food wraps is the way to go. These reusable wraps are cotton based and covered in beeswax, organic jojoba oil, and tree resin, one of the most eco-friendly alternatives to plastic wraps. They are also washable and help keep food fresh and tasty!

  • Reusable Storage Bags

The amount of plastic baggies we typically go through is astronomical. Americans use 100 billion plastic bags a year, which require 12 million barrels of oil to manufacture. That. Is. INSANE. So instead of contributing to this statistic, opt to start using reusable plastic baggies. These baggies are waterproof, leak proof, and easy to wash because they are dishwasher safe!

  • Opt For Glass Containers Rather Than Plastic

There are many benefits to choosing glass containers over plastic ones. Glass containers are much cleaner than plastic, as they don’t have porous surfaces to absorb food and germs. They tend to last much longer than plastic containers, wash easier, and expand the lifespan of leftover foods. I think it’s a no-brainer that glass containers are the winner here.

Washing dishes is hands down my least favorite chore. But these washable bamboo sponges make doing the dishes much more bearable!  These sponges are non-scratch, have powerful absorbency, and foams so well you don’t have to use as much dish soap! And the best part? Just throw them in the washing machine with your other loads! When they’re done, just let them air dry and they’re ready to use again. No hassle of throwing them away when they get dirty and stinky, and no spending money on replacing them with another pack.

One of the best things about swapping to a savvy kitchen is the money you’ll be saving in the process. You won't have to constantly replace single-use items and, trust me, you’ll end up saving a lot in the long run. So make the right choice for your pocket and the planet and start savvying up your kitchen!
