Amazing Destinations Making the Move Towards Sustainability

Okay all you savvy travelers. We all love to travel right? From relaxing beaches to incredible mountain views, there is so much to see out there! But what does it mean for a destination to be sustainable?  So many places around the world are becoming more committed to protecting the environment and reducing their carbon footprint and pollution levels. From implementing amazing public transportation systems, to encouraging citizens to reduce their waste, many cities around the globe are doing their part to help our environment.

Here are some incredible destinations that are making the move towards sustainability:

  • Helsinki, Finland

In Helsinki, walking, biking, and public transportation account for 77% of all travel within the city. It is known as one of the “greenest” cities in Europe and has announced the ambitious plan to eliminate the need for cars within the city by 2025. They are a pioneer in sustainable urban development by also placing a strong emphasis on encouraging environmentally-friendly lifestyles from its citizens by reducing carbon emissions and limiting unnecessary consumption.

  • Ljubljana, Slovenia

Slovenia’s capital and largest city has also claimed the name, “Europe’s Green Capitol”. And rightfully so. Ljubljana (pronounced loo-blee-ana) based its development strategy on green and sustainable practices. Ljubljana has focused on regenerating neglected areas of the city, encouraging development along popular main access routes and going out of its way to protect its natural greenery and green spaces. The city has also created less dependency on car transportation by creating an extremely efficient public transportation system.

  • The Azores Islands

The Azores Islands are located off the coast of Portugal and were recently listed among the Sustainable Destinations Global Top 100 regions in the world. The islands have become a responsible travel destination due to their conservation of local wildlife and commitment to green energy. They rely on energy sources such as wind, geothermic and biomass.  A lot of the excursions on the Islands are well-regulated to protect the local wildlife.

  • Costa Rica

Costa Rica was named by the World Energy Council as the second most sustainable country in the world. 99.2% of the country uses renewable energy and there are several government and local organizations that work hard to establish eco-friendly tourism throughout the country. Sustainability has become deeply ingrained in the local culture and has become a way of life.

  • Wellington, New Zealand

Wellington is ranked as one of the top eco-friendly cities in the world. A massive amount of energy in the city comes from renewable energy sources, and with a lower population density, there is a lot of green space. Through  low carbon transport, sustainable homes and buildings, a sustainable food initiative, and limiting the amount of waste produced, Wellington is working hard to reduce its environmental impact.
